Each year is a sacramental year as we grow deeper in our relationship with Jesus and our understanding of life in the Church. Our goals are to foster spiritual growth and prayerfulness, encourage parish participation, and empower young people to live as Disciples of Christ.
Please return all registration forms to St. Augustin Church, RE Department, 545 42nd Street, Des Moines, IA 50312. For more information contact Janis Falk, 515-255-1175 ext. 207
Public school students explore their relationship with God and develop their Catholic faith in our graded religious education program. We use the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd method for K-2nd grade (see below), and the Loyola Press Christ Our Life series for third - eighth grades. Catechesis of the Good Shepherd sessions are held in the church's lower level. Third through eighth grade classes are conducted in the St. Augustin Catholic School building located at 4320 Grand Ave.

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS)
CGS is a multi-age, hands-on approach to the religious formation which addresses the natural learning tendencies of small children. Level I is typically for 3-6 year-old children, and Level II is typically for 6-9 year-old children. Children gather in a specially prepared space called an “atrium.” Presentations, or lessons, are given, which always include a demonstration of how to use the associated materials. Children are then offered the opportunity to work with materials in the room. In the atrium the children have three freedoms: to choose (appropriately), to speak (quietly), and to move (carefully). Unlike a traditional RE classroom, in which children sit and absorb information given by a teacher, a CGS atrium is a place of peace, contentment, prayer and concentration. It is not uncommon for an atrium to be silent for extended periods during the children’s work time. Learn more here, or look at our parish CGS brochure.
Please note: Children entering 3rd grade who have attended CGS as 2nd graders are welcome to continue in the atrium if desired. Space is limited. Prompt registration is recommended.
St. Augustin atria are in the classrooms on the lower level of St. Augustin Catholic Church on the east side of the building.
Atrium session times:
Level I (3-6 years old), Wednesdays 9:30-11am, 4-5:30pm and 6-7:40pm
Level II (6-9 years old) Tuesdays 4-5:30pm, Wednesdays 4-5:30pm and 6-7:40pm

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd is used in many parishes in the Des Moines diocese and has been approved by the Diocesan Faith Formation offfice. See a letter from Bishop Pates, and from Father David Fleming of St. Pius X Parish: Fleming_Letter.pdf
First Communion/Reconciliation Preparation
Typically, students prepare for First Reconciliation and First Communion in 2nd grade, but there are always exceptions to the rule. Contact the Religious Education Coordinator, Janis Falk with any questions. St. Augustin Parish uses the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd approach for preparation for these sacraments. See below for more information.
In the Diocese of Des Moines, high school students 10th grade or older receive the sacrament of Confirmation. All St. Augustin Parish 9th graders need to register with the St. Augustin Religious Education Program, even if they attend Dowling Catholic High School. The tuition and materials fee of $80 covers both years of this 2-year preparation. Confirmation preparation includes catechesis, service, parish ministry, retreat and prayer. Classes meet Sunday mornings after 8am Mass, from 9:30-11am in Sept. and January for 10th grade, and Oct. and Feb. for 9th grade. 10th grade attends a retreat. All classes are mandatory. Make up classes are available on Wednesdays.
9th graders intending to be Confirmed must register for St. Augustin Confirmation Prep. To register use this form.
