First Holy Communion & Reconciliation Preparation

Now begins in earnest... 
the holy work of preparing our children for the reception of God's merciful love and full Communion in the Body of Christ. In this work, we continue to fulfill the promises we made at their baptism, to raise them in the Faith,  and to keep the Christ-light burning in their hearts. These moments rekindle our own faith, since it is our witness that ignites the faith of our children.
The mystery of the sacraments is so great that there is no end of wondering, absorbing and contemplating them. Even if we think we know all the correct answers to the simple questions we ponder, we will never plumb the depths of God's gifts, nor should we stop trying.

Activities

This year, in the interest of smallness, our Catechesis of the Good Shepherd children (public school) and St. Augustin Catholic School Children will prepare separately for the sacraments of First Communion and Reconciliation with the exception of the Tour of the Church (March 3rd), and portions of the First Reconciliation Retreat (April 18th). Tour of the Church, March 3rd.       This tour is a treasure hunt of sorts. The important features of the church will be labeled, and areas usually closed off will be opened for a closer view. Children complete this tour with a parent/guardian, and it usually takes about 45 minutes to complete.

Making a Banner      A long-standing tradition is for each child to make a name banner that will be hung along the sides of the church nave for First Communion Mass. Materials and instructions for this project will be provided at the parent meeting on April 5th.

Photos      This year a photographer will be available after First Communion Mass to take a group picture and also individual photos with our pastor. Photo purchases will be arranged by the photographer with you directly. No photos may be taken during Mass.

Dress Code      Girls: modest white dress, dress shoes. Veil or gloves are optional. Gloves need to be removed before the precious body is received.  Boys: Black, navy or khaki pants, collared shirt, with tie or sweater. Suit jacket is optional. No tennis shoes, please.
