"You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you."- St. Augustin
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.”
Colossians 3:16
Singing is a primary way in which the Word of God dwells in us individually and collectively in worship. When we lift up our collective “one voice” we are encouraging and teaching our fellow believers, we are proclaiming together that the Lord is King! This is one of the reasons why we as a church should seek to be invested in the music ministry at St. Augustin. When the choir is singing an anthem in worship they are teaching and encouraging the congregation, and joyfully lifting up the name of God. When the choir joins in singing congregational hymns they are teaching the congregation how to sing in harmony, using the different ranges that God has given to each person. When the musicians accompany the congregational singing they are supporting the collective “one voice” in the praise of our God. It is the goal of the music ministry at St. Augustin to continue to grow and develop as a community in breadth (numbers and strength) and in depth (ability and complexity) in order to teach, to encourage, and to lift up the name of Christ and the church! However, in order for this to be accomplished the choir and the instrumental activities at St. Augustin need to grow.
There are specific areas of the music ministry that require growth and strength in order to accomplish this goal: (1) the Sunday choir needs regular attending men and women to sing; (2) the music ministry needs musicians who play instruments at any peformance level to assist in accompanying the congregational singing of hymns and spiritual songs during worship; (3) all musical activities at St. Augustin need the youth and young adults to be involved in singing and playing during worship. The future of our church is held in the hands of young, and the future of music at St. Augustin is no different. If the music ministry is going to develop and grow, young people, college students, and young professional need to be involved.
Do you know how to play an instrument and/or sing but do not want to commit to weekly practice? We always have room for a solo or participation in Sunday worship on a one-time or limited basis. Are you interested in participating but worry about your musical abilities? St. Augustin welcomes all members of its parish to participate, regardless of ability! Please contact the Director of Music, Dr. Marion Scott, if you are interested in participating.
